History: Established in 1932, the School of Forestry at Guangxi University is one of the oldest colleges in the university's history. Famous forestry scientists and educators such as Chen Huanyong and Ma Dapu are key founders of the discipline. Over the past 90-plus years since its establishment, the college has gone through numerous challenges, including 12 relocations and six name changes. It has moved from Wuzhou in the east, to Guizhou in the west, to Guilin in the north, to Mingyang in the south, to Laibin, and has visited Liuzhou three times and Nanning three times. Despite these difficulties, the faculty and students of the college have always maintained a positive spirit, overcome challenges, worked diligently, and continuously created new opportunities for teaching and research. This has propelled the college to achieve comprehensive development in various fields. The college has successively entered the ranks of universities under the national "211 project" key construction university, national "double first-class" university, co-construction university of the Ministry of Education and People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Teacher qualifications: The college currently has nearly 70 faculty members, including 2 national high-level talents, 1 recipient of the State Council special allowance, 2 members of the Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 national forestry and grassland teaching master, and 1 young scholar from Guangxi and Guangxi; 100% of teachers hold a doctoral degree, with over 60% holding associate senior or higher professional titles, and 100% serving as doctoral or master's supervisors.
Scientific research: The college has teaching and research platforms such as the Key Laboratory of Rapid Wood Breeding in Central South China of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the Key Laboratory of Forest Ecology and Conservation in Guangxi, the Key Laboratory of Subtropical Artificial Forest Cultivation and Utilization in Guangxi Universities, the Autonomous Region Experimental Teaching Center of Forestry Science and Engineering, the Autonomous Region Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center of Forestry Science and Engineering, the Forestry and Ecological Planning and Design Research Institute of Guangxi University, the Tropical Artificial Forest Ecosystem Positioning Observation and Research Station of Guangxi University, and the Forest Ecosystem Positioning Research Station of One Hundred Thousand Mountains in Guangxi. The experimental teaching and research building covers an area of approximately 8300 square meters and has 87 sets of instruments and equipment worth over 100000 yuan, with a total value of over 65 million yuan; There is one on campus research and practical teaching base and 21 off campus research and practical teaching bases. In the past 10 years (from January 1, 2015 to August 31, 2024), a total of 632 scientific research projects have been approved, with a total contract funding of 175.91 million yuan, and a total research funding of 149.56 million yuan. There are 64 national-level projects and 95 provincial and ministerial-level projects. There are 2 first-prize and 5 second-prize provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards. There are 49 national invention patents authorized. Guangxi University has published 1,097 academic papers in important journals at home and abroad, with 357 papers included in SCI, 3 papers with an impact factor greater than 10, and 6 papers with ESI top 1% high-cited papers.
Discipline and degree program construction: The college currently has doctoral degree authorization points and postdoctoral research stations in the first level discipline of ecology, two master's degree authorization points in ecology and forestry, and two professional master's degree authorization points in forestry and landscape architecture. In the fourth and fifth rounds of national discipline evaluations, the doctoral program in the first level discipline of ecology achieved a good grade of B -, and the environmental science/ecology discipline was selected as one of the top 1% in ESI global rankings.
Education and teaching reform and talent cultivation: The college has two undergraduate majors, Forestry and Ecology, with 604 undergraduate students and 560 graduate students. So far, it has provided more than 30000 high-level specialized talents to the country. Forestry is a national first-class undergraduate major construction point, a major under the National Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Talent Training Program, a national characteristic major, an advantageous characteristic major in Guangxi universities, and a demonstration major for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform in Guangxi; Ecology is a distinctive and advantageous major in Guangxi. In recent years, student teams have won a total of 38 awards at or above the autonomous region level in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, including 5 at the national level and 4 special (gold) awards at the autonomous region level, breaking the historical record of A+innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. Adhering to the teaching centered approach, comprehensively deepening teaching reform, continuously improving talent training programs, unleashing students' innovative vitality, and promoting collaborative education among industry, academia, research, and application have improved the quality of talent training and achieved significant landmark results in teaching reform.
